SANTA ANA, ORANGE COUNTY — NOVEMBER 5, 2026. Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Vicente Sarmiento, the Orange County supervisor representing District 2 and a former Santa Ana mayor, to California’s Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
Why POST matters
The commission helps set professional standards for California law enforcement, including officer training and certification requirements. A local elected official joining the body can contribute experience from municipal and county governance, but the appointment itself does not rewrite training rules, impose new police discipline or change any pending case.
Who is Sarmiento?
According to the governor’s official biography, Sarmiento has served on the Orange County Board of Supervisors since 2023 and was mayor of Santa Ana from 2020 through 2022. Earlier, he was a Santa Ana councilmember from 2007 to 2020. He is also an attorney and has held positions associated with CalOptima Health and county community programs.
Terms of the appointment
The state says the appointment does not require Senate confirmation and provides compensation of $350 per diem, rather than a fixed annual salary. The release identifies Sarmiento as a Democrat. Officials and community members can follow upcoming commission meetings and agendas for policy discussions.
